Executive Team
Erick Sasaki - President
Erick joined SHUI in 1996.
Prior to joining SHUI, Erick was the North American Sales and
Marketing Manager for a Japanese trading company dealing in factory
automation equipment in the electronics industry.
There, he helped to set up some of the first surface mount
technology (SMT) lines into such companies as Hewlett Packard, IBM and
Solectron. Now, Erick is a frequent traveler to Japan where he speaks
and consults on such topics as broadband networks and services.
Tom Edrington – Senior Advisor
Tom brings a long and respected carrier in
telecommunications to SHUI. Prior
to SHUI, Tom served as the President and CEO of ATU Telecommunications,
the 20th largest telephone company in the United States providing local
exchange, long distance and cellular services within Alaska. Tom also
spent many years in the Bell system including serving as Pacific Bell's
AVP of Planning and Technology where he oversaw all network equipment,
planning and new network service products for the company.
Dave Fannin – Executive Vice President
David was most recently the Senior Vice President of Products and
Technology at Exodus, now a Cable and Wireless company.
Prior to that, David was an officer for SBC, the largest local
telecom provider in North American. His last position with SBC was
as President and CEO of SBC Technology Resources, Inc. (TRI), the
applied research and product development laboratories of SBC. Through
TRI, David was responsible for setting the technology direction for all
of SBC's major lines of business, including broadband services (DSL, IP,
ATM, WDM, PON), Internet, wireline, wireless and information systems. David was also formerly the President and CEO of the SBC
Internet Services (SBCIS) company, the 7th largest Internet Service
Provider (ISP) in the US.
Dr. Howard Chen – Executive Vice President
Howard brings over 20 years of experience in optics
and electronics to SHUI. After receiving his Ph.D. from Caltech in 1990
where he conducted semiconductor laser research with Prof. Amnon Yariv
and other optical networking industry leaders, Howard joined Bell Labs
in Murray Hill, NJ, where he made important contributions to multichip
module (MCM) electronic packaging research that resulted in an award
winning AT&T cordless telephone.
Howard also worked with AT&T Consumer Products on indoor
infrared networks. Howard has led teams on SONET OC-3 radio, 10G
IP/fiber, MPLS/DWDM and many other R&D projects at Lucent
Technologies in the past 10 years. Howard has published over 30 papers
in various journals and he holds 6 US patents in high-speed optical
network design, laser design, and interactive billing methods.
Further, Howard has demonstrated the world’s first CW
GaAs-on-Si laser, set a world record in lowest threshold laser current,
and made many important contributions in quantum well laser design and
high-speed laser modulation.
Phillip Sasaki – Vice President
Phillip brings a strong background in outside plant
planning and engineering to SHUI after retiring from Pacific Bell in
1997. Phillip's engineering skills found him as the planning engineer
for the Silicon Valley, working with the latest technologies in one of
the most dynamic areas in the country in terms of network design. Prior
to this, Phillip was in the Transport Technology Group at Pac Bell as an
ISDN expert where he also worked with NTT and Pacific Bell in the first
ISDN connectivity field trials between the US and Japan.
Miyoko Sasaki - Founder
Prior to founding SHUI, Miyoko Sasaki spent 34 years in
the Bell system including stops at AT&T, Illinois Bell, New York
Tel., and Pacific Bell. Miyoko’s last post with Pacific Bell found her
as the Director of International Business Relationships in the Science
and Technology Group. It was there that her duties included the
overseeing of the relationship between NTT and Pacific Bell and the
engineer exchange program between the two companies.
